You asked about choughs. I had no idea and so I went to look up choughs, and I am now fairly convinced that the huge group of black birds with red eyes that I've been referring to as our resident currawongs, are actually choughs! They exhibit all the behaviour of choughs (now that I know), and they have red eyes instead of yellow which of course currawongs should have.
No I'm in inner north of Melbourne, my mother is in Wattle Glen (next to Hurstbridge) where I grew up! Choughs are bizarrely wonderful aren't they? The group mentatlity, they wrestle each other too!
